The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is grieving the loss of K9 officer Rivan, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on April 2, 2024. The incident occurred during a planned attack by three inmates at Sussex State Prison in Waverly, Virginia, while a fourth inmate supervised the assault.
Affiliated with the MS-13 gang and identified as illegal immigrants by VADOC, the assailants targeted another inmate, prompting Corrections Officer Kharmisha Philips Fields and her loyal K9 partner, Rivan, to respond swiftly. Despite Rivan's courageous efforts to protect both Officer Fields and the targeted inmate, the attackers mercilessly stabbed and kicked the brave Belgian Malinois.
Rivan's intervention enabled corrections officers to halt the assault, sparing the lives of his handler and the inmate in jeopardy. While the injured inmate received medical treatment and returned to the prison, Rivan succumbed to his injuries, having valiantly shielded his colleagues from further harm.
VADOC Director Chad Dotson honored Rivan's sacrifice, emphasizing that his actions prevented a potentially deadly outcome.
"The loss of Rivan is truly tragic, but it is important to remember he did not die in vain." Dotson said in a statement. "He lost his life while potentially saving the lives of two people, his assigned Officer and an inmate. The VADOC will never forget Rivan’s sacrifice."
Rivan, a beloved member of the department since 2019, would have celebrated his sixth birthday on April 30th.
The assailants, originating from El Salvador and Guatemala, were convicted on multiple charges, including first-degree homicide, attempted rape, and possession of illegal substances. VADOC has vowed to pursue justice for Rivan's murder, affirming their commitment to holding the perpetrators accountable.
In response to the tragedy, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin condemned the barbaric actions of MS-13 gang members and offered condolences, recognizing Rivan as a heroic K9 who bravely served the community until his final moments.
"God bless Rivan, a heroic K-9 who was killed in the line of duty in Virginia. These barbaric members of MS-13 will be held accountable," Gov. said in a statement.
The loss of Rivan serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and their loyal companions, highlighting the selfless dedication exhibited by these courageous individuals in protecting their communities.
